Introduction

Almost every nation and country has a reputation of some kind. The Englishmen are reputed to be cold, reserved, rather naughty easy-going and fond of sport. They are the nation of stay-at-homes. , they say. The English man's home is his castle is a saying known all over the world. They prefer a small house built for one family, with a small garden are a fire in the centre of the house. They like animals very much and follow the traditions concerning food and meals. We know much about English traditions and customs but now I'd like to say a few words about the traditions of my native land-Russia. First, about Russian people. To my mind, the main traits of their characters which differ them from other people are hospitality, their , , wise Russian fairytales reflect this wisdom. Our people are hardworking, patient, never loosing hope for better life. The Russians are the talented nation. Russia gave the world beautiful names of Pushkin and Lermontov, Chaikovsky and Repin, thousands of names of world famous poets, writers, composers, scientists. All of them are the pride of the nation because they sand the beauty of our nature and people.
1. The role of customs and traditions in Russia

In ancient times, the territory of Russia was inhabited by Eastern Slavic tribes. The modern population of Russia is mostly descended from these tall, handsome, strapping men and women. Much has been passed down through the ages and generations, retained in our physical appearances, characters, habits and customs.
Our ancestors tilled the soil (bread was their main food), bred cattle, hunted, fished and kept bees. They were pagans and worshipped the gods of the sun (known as Dazbog or Jarilo), wind (Stribog) and thunder (Perun). The end of the frosts signaled widespread festivities, seeing of the winter and greeting the spring. People baked round pancakes symbolizing the sun and burnt straw effigies of winter.
Starting from 10th century A.D. Orthodox Christianity was spreading its influence upon the nation and gradually the Russian Orthodox Church has become the most important factor shaping its minds. The profound religious beliefs of the Russian people explain such features as their great patience in arduous situations, sense of conscience, kindness and compassion towards their fellow man, strivings for the spiritual and mistrust of cold calculation, personal advantage and mercantilism.[4,33] Although our troubled history has inevitably altered the national character, the aforementioned qualities still live on in the leading representatives of the nation. Russia is a country of firm and steady traditions. A special atmosphere of cordiality arises whenever close friends and relatives gather for refreshments or conversation.
Conclusion

As in any country, some people in Russia regard superstitions as pointless nonsense, some as a dangerous pagan influence, some as a law to be obeyed. What is interesting for the culturally curious in superstitions? For me they represent traces from deep in a people’s past, hinting at both material reality and attitudes of an age now closed to us but which exists deep in the roots of today’s cultures. Below are a few beliefs and practices I have come across in modern-day Russia.
Russian traditions and superstitions and beliefs includes superstitions and customs of Russians. Many of them are now inseparable parts of every day life, or simply common social etiquette, though they often have their origins in superstition. The awareness of them, and their perceived importance, depends on various factors including region and age. Some are extremely common and practiced by the vast majority of the population, while some are extremely obscure.
